Every group trip starts with "we should totally do a trip!" and dies somewhere around "wait, are we still doing this?" Here's how to skip the middle part.
The fix isn't more enthusiasm. It's better questions, asked early, answered honestly. Here are the 12 that matter, grouped into four rounds, plus a template you can paste straight into your group chat.
Round 1: Who's actually in?
- Are you in, probably, or can't make it? "Yes!!!" in a group chat means nothing. Three honest options give you your real headcount.
- Who else would you want to invite? Settle plus-ones and "can my roommate come" now, not after the house is booked for eight.
- Is there anything that would make you drop out? A work trip, a wedding, a budget ceiling. Better now than at the deposit stage.
Round 2: When?
- Which of these date ranges work? Offer two to four specific options. "When are you free?" gets you "flexible!" which is a lie.
- How many days off can you take? A long weekend and a full week are different trips.
- Any hard no dates? Birthdays, big work deadlines, the kid's recital.
Round 3: How much?
- What's your realistic total budget, including travel? The most important question on this list, and the one nobody answers honestly in public. Make it private. (Here's why it matters so much.)
- Are you flying or driving, and from where? A $200 flight for one person is a $700 flight for another.
- Shared room, own room, or don't care? This alone can swing the cost per person by hundreds.
The most important question is #7. It's also the one nobody answers out loud.
Round 4: What kind of trip?
- Beach, city, mountains, or surprise me? Get the vibe before anyone pitches a specific villa.
- Chill trip or packed itinerary? One person's "relaxing" is another person's 6 a.m. hike.
- Any must-haves or deal-breakers? Dietary needs, accessibility, "I will not share a bathroom with Dave."

The problem with doing this in the group chat
